When my parents decided they wanted to move to the country they went on a tour of the mid-west and used a food co-op guide to find a small town that would have at least a bit of a progressive side.
It worked - if you search for the Oneota Food Coop on that site you will see Decorah's food coop. It is much much larger now than it was when we moved over 25 years ago.

your parents are way cool and ahead of their time in many ways!!
Good advice. I sometimes miss San Francisco because of things like the Rainbow Co-Op....shopped there for many years...good advice Annie!
