Halloween 2011

Emmett rocked the hugest pumpking (but Silas would like you to know that his is spookiest because it was saying "ooooooooo".) Dr. Wendy (the SDCCS principal) wins for most completely outrageous and awesome costume...Captain Underpants...wow! Emmett pulled out the last minute "guy from the Dharma Initiative" for the Lost fans. Silas was a great Harry Potter with Hedwig and lots of spells.
Mac and Jordan, it seems, were each other...
Hope everyone had a happy halloweenie.

Integrity.

Read this article all the way through. It is completely worth it I think.
I love human beings who walk the walk.

Candlelight Pottery Class!

Whole different vibe, making pots in candlelight! I tried to get good pictures of everyone but most were really blurry. We'll definitely have to do this again!

Day 1

If you haven't already....Occupy Daily Boycott.
I hear tomorrow, Day 2, is Coca Cola Products.
This is a commitment, but nothing compared to sleeping in a tent on concrete. We can do this.

PS There are A LOT of Coca Cola products. Be prepared to drink water and coffee from home! ;)

A classic from the Archives

An Idea for Occupy Together

My name is Anne Lockee. I am a 40 year old business owner and mother of three.
I have things to say to the organizers of the Occupy Wall Street Protests to keep the momentum going but I don't know how or who to contact. If you find the following of interest, please do what you can to spread the word. Thanks.

MY WORRY: We are the 99% but many are unable to attend a protest for one reason or other. We need to find a way all interested citizens may participate and feel they can make an impact because so much of our disillusionment stems from feeling powerless. It also can't hurt to see our numbers grow. Another concern...when it starts getting cold outside the protests might wane a bit...AND also I fear that wall street is quite used to people mad at them. They may be able to withstand our ire for a very long time. So, since this is such an important moment....

MY IDEA: We stage targeted "boycotts" that are announced via facebook/twitter. For instance, the entire 99% does not shop for only one day at a different place and this place changes every single day. (after all we are not trying to put anyone out of business or do harm but make a point and show our power.) It could go like this monday no amazon NOT ONE DIME...tuesday no starbucks...wednesday no arco...etc. Again, the company does not matter. All companies are culpable, even the good ones, because they are all part of the Wallstreet Machine. Our goal is not to shut down the country. After all, we want to employ people. But we will no longer feel like helpless consumers that have no choice but to buy the "company stores" product no matter what the price. We have a choice...so we choose!

AND THEN, TO EXPLAIN OUR PURPOSE: We calculate the amount of money a company loses every day and say... "Hey, that's a lot of money in just one day." Now let's compare that to the FAIR amount of tax we'd like you to pay...or “How much is that compared to the insane bonuses you give your CEO” etc etc etc. After OWS comes up with it's demands something can be written and signed for individual companies to show their support, creating a list of sympathetic companies.

BECAUSE: We are not trying to screw anyone, we just demand fairness.

AND: Since the best way to achieve fairness is,in part, to REGULATE Wallstreet and modify the tax code (i.e. add a tax bracket for millionaires, scrap overseas tax havens, introduce a modest financial transaction tax, revamp the estate tax, end preferential treatment on capital gains tax).... we need americans to see that many big companies may actually be on board which could really change things.

AND IN THE END: This is a relatively painless thing for all. The rich will still be rich. The free market will still be free (just not allowed to be as corrupt) and ALL OF US will enjoy our American citizenry without so much contempt for each other.

AND TO END WITH A SLOGAN THAT MATTERS: "When we all do better, we all do better."

A great Article about the right wing's answer to the 99% Protests. They call it the 53%

...and it's heartbreaking as this story from salon articulates.

The term 99% doesn't mean that 99% of Americans are in support of the Occupy Wallstreet Movement...just that 99% of us, whether you like it or not, are victims of our broken
corporate government.

AND if you want to read a very POSITIVE article about this whole thing...

I am tired of hearing the question repeated over and over on TV...

"Why are they protesting?" or "What is their message?"

And here's a sound bite (just one among many I have heard) that answers those same questions in less than one minute.

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."
Mahatma Ghandi

Happy Birthday Silas Who Is FIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is the birthday boy on the morning of his 5th birthday!
Yes, this boy is really getting big and learning so much every day. Last night he told me that he now knows how to make his "Th" sound correctly, not like "F".
So now his favorite sloth stuffed animal that was named "Fro-ee" after being thrown across the room upon first meeting is now "Throw-ee"
Hence, his second favorite stuffed animal, Frankie the Owl, is now called "Thrankie".
I love his logic and his energy and his sweetness.
Happy Birthday Silas Loyal Dreyer xoxoxoxoxoxo

99%

Very dramatic music aside, I think the 5 changes proposed in this video are good ones.
And after the very rich and the huge corporations freak out and say it's the end of freedom, the end of the world even(!) and try desperately to fight it.... if these changes were made...after all was said and done, truthfully they could handle it and would still be ridiculously rich and FREE. AND they would be living in a more decent and equitable world. Jeez.

1. add a tax bracket for millionaires
2. scrap overseas tax havens
3. introduce a modest financial transaction tax
4. revamp the estate tax
5. end preferential treatment on capital gains tax

And if you've gotten this far into this post you won't mind reading a slightly off topic and badly named article that is still very good (and, I'll admit, grim) that pretty much sums up a sad truth that's been on my mind. HERE IT IS<----(click there:)

Old Town Fair

And they're off for their annual trip with Don to stay at Iz and Benj's grandma's house where they go to the Old Town Fair. It is described to me every year like this: we eat cookies and deviled eggs and go on rides have freedom and go to the beach and it's awesome. Fourth year in a row! (yes, I can't believe that Emmett was only 6 the first time. I think it was his very first overnight, far from home!)

I don't want to forget the name of this plant again.

So....I am putting it here on this blog

Hypoestes Aristata

.
I love it. It gets big, takes over ugly space and blooms from Sept-Jan. Looks green and great the rest of the year too.

Peace.

Three slips of paper handed to me by 5th graders after the SDCCS Peace Day assembly.
They read.

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten we belong to eachother
Mother Teresa

Establishing lasting peace is the work of education...
Maria Montessori

If there is to be peace in the world,
There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations,
There must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities,
There must be peace between neighbors,
If there is to be peace between neighbors,
There must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart.

upstairs, revamped

So it seems that while Cami and Craig and Finley were changing up their Brooklyn digs we were doing the same here. (bandana in hair, furrowed brow, dust bunnies, slight nervous breakdown, way too many cartoons for Silas...)
Matt had a great idea to move the record player out into the living room since our 12 year old bose cd player died. This, of course, set all sorts of change in motion.
New homework/art space, reading area AND Emmett's new own private room/nook that we
sectioned off with a dresser and a screen and a curtain. He loves it. Silas also likes his privacy now too with a new curtain.

(think I took enough pictures? jeez.)
